Purpose of Financial Advisors and the like?

What is the purpose of having financial advisors and people in similar occupations? I realize that they are trying to help people make sense of finances such as stocks and whatnot, but if you think about it, why would you want to help someone else become potentially wealthier than yourself? This question goes for things such as economics/finance courses, as well. Is the main purpose, besides educating individuals on how money works, to help them become wealthier or what?

1. Well in essence by helping other people with their finances your helping yourself. You not only get money for the services but by advising them on the market, your creating a better economy therefore making your own positions stronger.
